Chaffing Thighs – or Midsummer Misery
Whilst there’s little comfort in knowing the chemistry behind what’s causing your chafing thighs, understanding the problem can help you try to avoid it. So, that’s the approach we’re taking here at www.chafingthighs.co.uk we’re not going to blind you with science, just give you a few reasons why you are experiencing this problem while the woman next door – who may be an altogether plumper build than you, is unaware of your midsummer misery.
With most people the body’s cooling system works with quiet efficiency, sweating - or call it perspiring if you like - away excess heat through the skin. The moisture sweated out through the skin evaporates and the overheated body cools down. Result.
If, however, a person has a particular part of their body where the humid, excreted moisture can’t escape and evaporate - in this instance the inner thighs, then the area becomes wet. This warm wetness provides the perfect incubator for bacteria and yeast to grow – or in more brutal terms, the humid wetness where two folds of skin rub together becomes red, irritated and infected – chaffing thighs!
What to do.
It is likely, though not 100% the case that your chaffing thighs are accompanied by rather more weight than is good for you. You are at least plump if not overweight and the heavier you get, the worse your chafing thighs problem will become. So, as a plumper person is normally a warmer person than her skinny sister, keeping the skin temperature down is important. Personal hygiene therefore, is an absolute priority. A morning shower should be part of your daily hygiene routine if at all possible. Although you may enjoy luxuriating under a hot stream of water, it is of vital importance that you allow cool or better still, cold water to cascade over your body at the end of the shower to lower your temperature.
Take care to dry your skin properly; moving from the humid atmosphere of the bathroom into a dryer, cooler bedroom to perform this task is a good idea as the skin will dry more easily and thoroughly away from the humidity your shower will have occasioned. So - start the day with a cool, dry, bacteria free skin. It is OK to use talc powder, but only apply once you are totally cool and dry so that there’s no fear of it forming a moist paste between where your thighs rub together.
Although some women use creams to protect their thighs from chafing together – petroleum jelly works well as does zinc oxide and even baby-rash ointments, not everyone can cope with what they describe as the ‘clammy sensation’ of a substance spread onto the skin.
Knickers bought for the purpose of separating your thighs to avoid chafing need to be natural fibres so be sure that you buy 100% cotton. Of course, the knickers need to have legs in them and these legs need to be long enough to protect the whole area where the thighs touch.
At www.chafingthighs.co.uk we can offer both long legged and short legged knickers – some very short women find our short legged knickers are just long enough to do the job. The knickers have been designed with a V gusset so that there is only one thickness of cotton fabric on the inner leg, hence, less bulk and less chance of humidity build up or moisture retention within the garment – so, no reason for chafing.

Chafing thigh remedies
The main cause of thigh chafing is sweating and rubbing of the inner thighs, many believe this is caused by excessive weight, but this is not necessarily correct. Many cyclist joggers and walker suffer from chafing thighs. The friction between the inner thighs during hot temperatures causes a skin irritation that quickly leads to a rash. This inner thigh chafing can become incredibly uncomfortable and also lead to infection.
People use all types of remedies to prevent the chafing, thigh lubricants, powders, creams but we believe the best remedy is to wear appropriate clothing.
The idea of loosing clothing ,that although can feel more comfortable in fact enhances the problem. A snug well fitting pair of natural fibber long legged underwear is recommended by the specialist.

Chafing on the body is where two different parts of the torso are in contact, say where two thighs rub together, often leading to irritated skin and / or soreness, and perhaps infection. This is often caused by the constant rubbing or chafing of one body part against another, for example where two thighs chafe together. However, when two body parts chafe together, say two thighs, the chafing does not have to be constant. Two thighs chafing together from time to time, can be enough to set up soreness at the top of the legs.

Chafing can also be caused simply by sweat forming between different sections of skin on the body, between the layers of skin on two thighs is very common. The contact does not have to be as physical as two thighs chafing together; chafing thighs can occur simply because sweat is present between the layers of skin. The presence of sweat does not act as a lubricant, rather the reverse can be true - sweat can cause skin to become irritated and lead to chafing thighs and on-going soreness. And sweat does not arise only in warm weather when you might expect chafing thighs simply because it is hot. Sweating can occur when exercising thereby giving rise to chaffing thighs and soreness, or perhaps more.
So how does soreness show itself and how can you deal with the problem of chafing thighs? You might have red, tender and swollen areas of skin, perhaps leading to something that looks like a cut or scrape. Left untreated this can lead to an infection, often known as “cellulitis” in the two chafing thighs, not a pleasant condition at all.
So how can you deal with chafing thighs? To our minds prevention is far better than cure. This means that it is best to prevent thighs from chafing in the first place rather than treat the resultant soreness or infection. Ideally thighs can be prevented from chafing by providing protection, or a soft barrier, between the chafing thighs. Soft bandages would prevent chafing thighs, but that would be impractical on a daily basis.
A far more practical solution is to use long leg knickers or panties to prevent chafing thighs. Our long leg knickers or panties can be used in the same manner as standard knickers or panties. They can be used and washed on a daily basis similar to any other knickers or panties, and they will remain soft and ready to help prevent chafing thighs whenever they are worn. Thus the use of long leg knickers or panties is a very simple and practical way to prevent chafing thighs. |
